Every day, printing and packaging manufacturers across India lose orders they were fully capable of winning — not on price, and not on quality, but on time.
Here’s the pattern. An enquiry comes in — over WhatsApp, email, or a phone call. It needs pricing. Usually, only a few senior people in the business can price it accurately — the owner, and maybe one or two others. And more often than not, they’re already occupied: in a meeting, on the shop floor, travelling, or simply buried under everything else that needs their attention that day. So the enquiry waits. An hour. Sometimes a full day.
Meanwhile, the buyer isn’t waiting quietly. Almost every custom packaging buyer requests quotes from two or three suppliers at once, especially for a new relationship. This is where speed matters — not because a fast quote wins the order outright. Price still decides that. But a slow quote can knock you out of contention before price is ever compared. If a buyer has two quotes in hand and yours hasn’t arrived, you’re not competing from a weaker position — you may not be competing at all. Quoting quickly doesn’t guarantee you the order. It guarantees you stay in the running long enough for your price to be considered.
The deeper issue isn’t a staffing problem, even though it can feel like one. Hiring another person doesn’t fix it, because the constraint isn’t hands on deck — it’s who’s allowed to make a pricing call, and that group is small by necessity. Pricing needs judgment: knowing the real costs, the right margin for the quantity, what the relationship can bear. That naturally sits with the same few senior people, no matter how the rest of the team grows.
The cost adds up faster than it looks. If a manufacturer handles even five to ten enquiries a day, and a fifth of them go quiet simply because the quote didn’t arrive in time, that’s potentially one or two orders a day, every day, lost before anyone even got to discuss price.
What good looks like isn’t complicated: quotes going out the same day, ideally the same hour, consistently — without your senior team personally recalculating every single one, and without needing to grow that senior team just to keep up. That takes a different kind of process, not more hours in the day.
If this sounds familiar, it’s worth asking: how many enquiries are quietly falling out of contention every week, simply because they didn’t get a number back in time?
